baaaaaaatgirl
so heres my entry for project rooftops batgirl challenge (deadline is today).
my original design didn’t have the cape-thing. I wanted a batgirl that felt really “rumble tumble”. One that spends a lot of time rolling and elbowing leaping off shit. But as is the case most of the time with me, the more i developed it the more”elegant” it got. I added the cape, which is split in the back to mimic wings, and i took out a belt by added the pouches onto the back of the jacket. Gave Babs some lenses for that tactical technology stuff.

So since the reveal page of Maddie’s new design, I figure I can post this now.
The design for the All-New Madelyne Pryor.
Like with the Selene design, I didn’t entirely want to throw out what has come before. While the previous designs (namely the goblin queen one) have largely been very TnA’y, but in that there was a beauty in the simplistic  graphic nature of the costumes, and I wanted to keep a hint of that. But as I approached Maddie, the key words in my head that helped steer my vision was “executive bitch witch”. I wanted to evoke a sense of power in a simple and elegant costume, while also serving as a contrast to selene who was more detailed and fetish oriented. The jewels are also a throwback to the goblin queen costume.
I also love having hair cover one eye.

So debuting today, the New Design for Selene, the Black Queen.
Not much to say about it, honestly. We wanted to be new and fresh, but not completely. It was important to me to keep the “S&M” vibe she’s always had, but I didn’t want to continue the thong-ed out look. I went with a more fetishy direction, but make it a bit more of a dress. I’ve always been a big fan of cage-dresses, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity to use it. A lot of necklaces and jewels because Selene has always struck me as the type to be overly decadent with whatever she’s doing.

So. Wolverine.

My final design has been posted as a variant for issue 1, so I thought i’d take the time to walk you down the road I journeyed with this design.

Back in April 2013 I began my process. The original prompt I was given by Jeanine Schaeffer was that Wolverine was to lose his healing factor and now needs a new costume to help counterbalance his mortality. What if Logan went to a Reed Richards or a Tony Stark and had them craft him a now impervious suit? I also felt it was time to get rid of the blue and yellow. Don’t get me wrong, the blue and yellow cassaday costume is my single favourite wolverine costume ever, but its been over a decade. My original idea was to go with the brown and tan, but then i remembered a colour scheme i adored.

So I decided to try out an Orange and Black scheme with this suit. I then thought about the idea of a Stark/Richards built suit. Which then reminded me of the outfit from AvX that the avengers wore to help them take on the Phoenix’s.

So I jumped from here with the idea that what if they just took the remnants of these suits and crafted something new for logan.

But also. there’s the whole aspect of the psychology of his new status quo. What happens to a man who’s very fighting style is robbed of an essential aspect. This sent me off imagining how Logan would have to re-discipline himself back to his samurai training. Bring back the methodical fighting, the strategy. There was a point in time where there was a potential that instead of using his claws anymore due to the pain, that he would use samurai swords mostly. This birthed an image in my head of Logan now circling the battle, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. Staying in the shadows until the most tactical moment.

and then I began drawing

a1 - a8

- So here I was trying a few things out. I wanted to incorporate some of the design elements from the AvX suit with the Samurai armour. At this stage I didn’t want to try anything twice. Some are more stealth oriented, while others are form fitting armour. (I still like the idea of him wearing a mask that covered his mouth. I loved the idea that Logan would where sort of a demon face as compensation for his inability to go berserker anymore). As you can tell, I’m a fan of the tiny wings on the mask.

So these were all sent in and after a few weeks I was given notes. This is also a good time to note that because this was the first Top tier character i was working on (some might argue storm, but none of the xforce characters are really as brand recognizable as wolverine and spidey etc) the amount of oversight was fairly big. From what I gathered, notes had to be given from the very top of the company, thusly why everything sort of took a while. The notes basically were to combine A1 with these samurai armour look.

which led to round 2

b1- b6

- Now I have the beginnings of a unified direction. Here I’m trying out some combinations of the Orange/top heavy look with the armour panelling. Not much to really note here. Once i sent these in the note I was given back was to combine the hips and legs of b2, with the top of b4. They liked the X that the shapes created (see kids? its not always me who wants an X)

b7

- from there it led to this mock up. Just sort of letting all the details settle in.

Final

- So now I went to create a final design sheet. I wanted to leave nothing explained. I approach these design sheets with the idea of “what information would I want to know if i needed to draw the character?”. Which, to me, is all the information. So I went back and forth with the final design and the editors involved until I ended up with what I have here. I also played with the idea of Logan shaving his head after losing his healing factor as a sort of “clean start” for him. A visual representation of the rebirth he was going through.

and with that, I think that’s it with this design. Easily the longest i’ve ever spent on a single costume (took roughly 2 months from beginning to end).

So.
as it was shown yesterday to the cover of X-men #10, Monet is getting a new costume.
and this is the new design.
now, ill be frank this one was tough in the fact that the concept was incredibly vague on many levels.
the first, when i was doing my research and looking at all of her old costumes, there weren’t any common visual themes that ran through them. her costume would change drastically with each incarnation, and even with each of them, there was never an iconic element to them.
the second was that brian wood, jeanine schaeffer and i all really liked the implantation of white into the costume with her most recent costume. so that was something we definitely wanted to keep.
this book now marks a new chapter for monet, so we thought a new costume was in order. I wanted to keep it simple as well.
I increased the amount of white in the costume to sort of show a “fresh/rejuvenation” to her. i kind of wanted this to read as a clean start. but the black and red tubing was a really good look from her last costume, so i didn’t want to get rid of that.
I also really wanted to hammer the point home that she’s coming to the X-men, so what better than to make a costume that joins side by side with the storm and psylocke costume i also designed, who are also on the same team as her now, than to throw a giant X on her haha. Plus I liked where the cut between the black and white happen. I wanted to keep it away from a penguin-y look (which i kept remember the mara costume that ming doyle design which is fabulous and i really didn’t want to step on her toes).
I wanted her to look athletic as well. She’s generally a brawler, so I wanted to show that. not a lot of fuss on the costume. and i went with something different for the boots just to not have standard looking boots. a lot of what decided the direction i was gonna go was simply not trying to be standard; the boots, the sleeve length, the gloves etc.
also, i should make note because both brian and jeanine called me out on it, is to how weird it is to see monet smile so much. but hey, what i can i say, i like my heroes happy haha.

I thought it would be interesting if Lex was all burnt up and mangled from Superman battles.
Oh and i thought he should have a kryptonite katana.

I really shouldn’t have taken the time to do this, but I was way too damn inspired by Cory Walker’s to not do a superman sketch as a warm up today.
i find it funny that with each redesign i do, i keep getting simpler. and i wanted to try a design with shorts.
