My final design has been posted as a variant for issue 1, so I thought i’d take the time to walk you down the road I journeyed with this design.
Back in April 2013 I began my process. The original prompt I was given by Jeanine Schaeffer was that Wolverine was to lose his healing factor and now needs a new costume to help counterbalance his mortality. What if Logan went to a Reed Richards or a Tony Stark and had them craft him a now impervious suit? I also felt it was time to get rid of the blue and yellow. Don’t get me wrong, the blue and yellow cassaday costume is my single favourite wolverine costume ever, but its been over a decade. My original idea was to go with the brown and tan, but then i remembered a colour scheme i adored.
So I decided to try out an Orange and Black scheme with this suit. I then thought about the idea of a Stark/Richards built suit. Which then reminded me of the outfit from AvX that the avengers wore to help them take on the Phoenix’s.
So I jumped from here with the idea that what if they just took the remnants of these suits and crafted something new for logan.
But also. there’s the whole aspect of the psychology of his new status quo. What happens to a man who’s very fighting style is robbed of an essential aspect. This sent me off imagining how Logan would have to re-discipline himself back to his samurai training. Bring back the methodical fighting, the strategy. There was a point in time where there was a potential that instead of using his claws anymore due to the pain, that he would use samurai swords mostly. This birthed an image in my head of Logan now circling the battle, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. Staying in the shadows until the most tactical moment.
and then I began drawing
a1 - a8
- So here I was trying a few things out. I wanted to incorporate some of the design elements from the AvX suit with the Samurai armour. At this stage I didn’t want to try anything twice. Some are more stealth oriented, while others are form fitting armour. (I still like the idea of him wearing a mask that covered his mouth. I loved the idea that Logan would where sort of a demon face as compensation for his inability to go berserker anymore). As you can tell, I’m a fan of the tiny wings on the mask.
So these were all sent in and after a few weeks I was given notes. This is also a good time to note that because this was the first Top tier character i was working on (some might argue storm, but none of the xforce characters are really as brand recognizable as wolverine and spidey etc) the amount of oversight was fairly big. From what I gathered, notes had to be given from the very top of the company, thusly why everything sort of took a while. The notes basically were to combine A1 with these samurai armour look.
which led to round 2
- Now I have the beginnings of a unified direction. Here I’m trying out some combinations of the Orange/top heavy look with the armour panelling. Not much to really note here. Once i sent these in the note I was given back was to combine the hips and legs of b2, with the top of b4. They liked the X that the shapes created (see kids? its not always me who wants an X)
- from there it led to this mock up. Just sort of letting all the details settle in.
- So now I went to create a final design sheet. I wanted to leave nothing explained. I approach these design sheets with the idea of “what information would I want to know if i needed to draw the character?”. Which, to me, is all the information. So I went back and forth with the final design and the editors involved until I ended up with what I have here. I also played with the idea of Logan shaving his head after losing his healing factor as a sort of “clean start” for him. A visual representation of the rebirth he was going through.
and with that, I think that’s it with this design. Easily the longest i’ve ever spent on a single costume (took roughly 2 months from beginning to end).
